Founded in 2009 Beneath the Wood Animal Sanctuary had been a small sanctuary in Pembrokshire North Wales until 2019 when they were involved in a court case to help rescue #53pigs that had been kept in awful conditions in an illegal smokery, destined to end up on someone’s dinner plate.

The council confiscated the pigs from their original owner and placed a destruction order on their heads, while this was being contested the original 53 pigs, sows and boars were not separated and. . . well with the arrival of baby piglets there were over 100 pigs.

Luckily the court ruled in the sanctuary’s favour & granted that the pigs could live out their lives at Beneath the wood (some of the piglets born at the sanctuary were allowed to go to other sanctuaries, but Beneath the wood’s dependants tripled overnight.

They are now home to over 90 pigs and over 135 animals in total. The cost of caring for and feeding so many animals is a huge challenge.
